A Matter of Perspective: Building a Multi-Perspective Annotated Dataset for the Study of Literary Quality

We are proud to announce that our very own Yuri Bizzoni, Postdoc and Computational Literature Analyst at Center for Humanities Computing, will be presenting a new research paper next week at the hybrid LREC-COLING 2024 conference in Torino, Italy.

The paper, titled “A Matter of Perspective: Building a Multi-Perspective Annotated Dataset for the Study of Literary Quality,” is a collaborative effort with co-authors Pascale Feldkamp, Mads Rosendahl Thomsen, and Kristoffer Nielbo.

In this exciting study, our researchers present a unique dataset designed to examine the concept of literary quality. The dataset features quality judgments on 9,000 English-language novels from the 19th and 20th centuries by 3,150 authors, spanning Nobel Prize winners to popular mainstream novels and genres like Mystery and Science Fiction. It includes various metrics related to literary reception, such as bestseller status and Goodreads ratings, offering a comprehensive resource for investigating the relationship between textual features and reader appreciation.

Event details: LREC-COLING 2024, held at the Lingotto Conference Centre in Torino, will take place from May 20-25, 2024. The conference brings together leading experts in computational linguistics, language resources, and evaluation.
