Researchers working with narratives, digital methods, and computational tools are encouraged to submit their work to the upcoming special issue about Computational Narratology of the Computational Humanities Research Journal (CHR Journal). The deadline for submission is August 31, 2025.

The themed issue focuses on Computational Narratology - an emerging interdisciplinary field at the intersection of narratology, digital humanities, computer science and artificial intelligence. The special issue aims to explore how computational methods can be used to analyse, generate, and model stories across different media, formats, and cultural contexts.

About the Special Issue

Narratives play a central role in human culture, communication, and cognition. With the rapid development of data-driven methods, machine learning, and natural language processing, new opportunities have emerged for studying and creating narratives across diverse formats — from literature to games, films, and interactive media. This special issue of CHR Journal seeks to bring together contributions that combine computational techniques with narratological theory.  This issue particularly encourages contributions that represent methodological approaches and novel computational techniques. Submissions may address textual, multimodal, or interactive narratives and can explore various languages and cultural contexts.

Topics of interest

This issue invites submissions on (but not limited to) the following topics:
1. Narrative Structure, Representation and Analysis
2. Narrative Generation and Evaluation
3. Sentiment, Emotion, and Affect
4. Cross-Cultural and Multilingual Narratology
5. Narratives in Non-Traditional and Multimodal Media
6. Corpus Development and Annotation
7. Theoretical and Methodological Advances
8. Applications of Computational Narratology

CHC part of the Editorial Team

Among the editors of this special issue are Professor Kristoffer Nielbo, Editor-in-Chief of CHR Journal, and Senior Researcher Yuri Bizzoni, Guest Editor - both based at the Center for Humanities Computing at Aarhus University.Together with the editorial team, they invite contributions that advance interdisciplinary research in computational narratology and expand our understanding of narrative structures across languages, media, and cultural settings.

About the Journal

Computational Humanities Research Journal is the official journal of the Computational Humanities Research Conference and is published by Cambridge University Press. The journal provides a platform for research at the intersection of computational methods and the humanities.
