CORE Talk: 3 April 2025 at 10.00 - 11.00: Rebekah Baglini on 'Contemporary Cultures of Text in the Era of LLMs: Introducing the TEXT Center'

In this talk, I will introduce the newest member of the CORE group - TEXT: Center for Contemporary Cultures of Text. Structured around four inde-pendent Work Packages, TEXT brings together an interdisciplinary group of researchers within the humanities, social sciences, and technical sciences to critically approach the affordances and limitations of LLMs in the following domains: creativity and cultural production; education and business; foundation model development and assessment; and linguistics and cognitive science research. Special focus will be placed on WP4, surveying key research questions and directions for use of LLMs in studies of language, cognition, and communication. Can LLMs serve as a model or experimental testbed for human language acquisition? Is LLM performance affected by typological variation in language structure? Are learned linguistic representations from large models key to developing high-performing smaller models? Is widespread diffusion of LLM-generated text affecting literacy, media consumption, and online discourse?
